MENSTRUATION: A TABOO

Menstruation ,yes you read it right, its only menstruation, which is a natural phenomenon of women’s life. Then what’s the need to treat it like a TABOO,still we face the social prejudice about women’s period.

But one good thing happen that with the time women in urban settings are becoming more vocal about Menstruation. But women in rural india are still socially boycotted, shamed for periods. This is might be because of illeteracy in rural areas.

The very uncivilised thought of considering women untouchablewhile they are on their periods is still rife or prevelent in most of the places.Even in so many places, women are force to leave their homes and stay in uncoordinated, clumsy places ,as they are not considered fit to stay at home and a very good example of this we saw in movie PADMAN,where the heroine radhika apte slept in balcony during her periods.

Recently I read that in GHURCHUM village, champawat district of uttarakhand, where a government funded building has been constructed where women were sent to that constructed building during their menstrual cycle or periods.
After getting this news ,DM’s notice ,he passed the order to shut the buildings.
This is not the only incident in uttarakhand, in which menstruating women were subjected to discrimination. There are further more cases not only in uttarakhand ,in all over india especially the RURAL AREAS,even so many communties believe that a menstruating women is impure.
There are so many

SUPERSTITIONS about periods are famous not only in india even all over the world, here I put some examples of superstitions about periods in different Countries, they are :-

1)NEPAL:-you can’t be in homes

2)ISRAEL:-you get slapped on the face when you get your 1 st period, so you have a beautiful red cheeks all your life .

3)COLOMBIA:- Don’t wash /cut your hairs .

4)POLAND :- Having sex can kill your partner . while periods
You cant touch flower because they will die quicker.

5)MALAYSIA :-you need to wash your pads before throwing them out.otherwise ghosts will come and haunt you.

6)INDIA :-can’t enter kitchen or cook for any one
Can’t enter place of workship
Don’t touch pickle
Don’t touch plants
.
Even in some cultures in india , the period was seen as a gift and when a girl would menstruate for the first time ,it would be a celebration in public

Taboo around menses has started to be seen as a threat to health and many people are willing to break the silence.
In the exploration of the origins and basis of menstrual taboo,we have looked at the perception of menstrual cycle in different cultures and religions.
The root of almost every perception seems to be Patriarchy.
The origin of taboo certainly seems to be the descrimination that women have had to face from primitive times.there are few ways may be it help to remove these taboos and superstitions among all.like spread the awareness , educate more people ,let them know the benefit of having menstruation in womens life, let them educate that it’s a part of womens life, and it’s a natural phenomenon of womens life.
I think having menstruation is not a taboo or problem , not having menses may create a Problem for all .
